Maud Wagner

Maud Wagner was the first female tattoo artist and I felt inspired to draw her back when I only had one tattoo. I find it interesting that I chose to remove her tattoos in my drawing as they are such a fundamental part of her and why she has some fame. What is left looks much more vulnerable, but is still not plain. There's something in her expression that makes her stand out even without the controversial tattoos. I wonder whether I was trying to express more about vulnerability and identity. 

Either way, I love tattoos and have several big colour pieces so I have a reason to honour Maud.
