Thoughts
This is part of the series that I have been working on related to female poses, other pieces include 'Cut Open' and 'Release'. I think the colours in the bruising are really beautiful despite the dark imagery. I like that the skin seems to be glowing against the darkness, perhaps it is a sign of a brighter future? She is supposed to have something in her mouth to cut into it and hold it open so the red is pouring out. The over-the-top Disney-like sad eyes add a certain lost innocence to her. She is forced to be in this position and vulnerable in her nudity, hence trying to cover up. The emotion and thoughts are not even hers to keep secret - they are pouring out too.
I was reflecting on this piece a few days after drawing it and realised I had pains in my right jaw, shoulder, and hip. The bruising was placed where I thought it felt right, but with no other precognition.
Red II
2023
ink, markers, charcoal
Process
I began with a simple pose, sketched out in shapes, and considered what I saw in the pose. I wanted to put in the column of red then it became a stream(?) and I liked that I could use it to not have to draw her vagina. I added the ink outlines and then coloured using spectrum noir markers. I used many different copic grey toners to create layers of rock. Finally, I darkened the piece with charcoal and made sure the background had texture but was mostly black. The charcoal layer really helped to make the bruising more believable.
